Welcome to the final frontier of computing, the Cloud. The cloud is made up of huge clusters of commodity hardware and Hadoop (http://hadoop.apache.org/core/) provides the mean to harness it's power. An Open Source implementation of Map Reduce that allows you to distribute tasks in a fault tolerant way over many, many machines.
